Ljubljana is small enough to know in two days. Most of what makes it pleasant — the river embankments, the bridges, the market colonnade — was designed by one architect, Jože Plečnik, in the first half of the twentieth century; his works here are on the UNESCO list.
Day 1 — Plečnik's city
Start at Prešeren Square and cross the Triple Bridge. Walk the Central Market and Plečnik's colonnade along the river, then the Dragon Bridge. Take the funicular up to Ljubljana Castle for the view to the Alps on a clear day.
Day 2 — Metelkova and Tivoli
Morning in Tivoli Park. In the afternoon, visit Metelkova, a former army barracks turned into an autonomous cultural zone covered in murals; it comes alive at night. Eat along the Ljubljanica in the evening.
Day 3 — Lake Bled
Take an early bus to Bled — roughly an hour and a quarter. Walk the 6-kilometre path around the lake before the day-trippers arrive. Take a pletna boat to the island church, and try the cream cake (kremšnita).
In the afternoon, walk or take the seasonal shuttle to Vintgar Gorge, a boardwalk along a river canyon. It is ticketed and closes in winter. Sleep in Bled.
Day 4 — Lake Bohinj
Take the bus on to Lake Bohinj, larger and much quieter than Bled, inside Triglav National Park. Walk the shore, or take the cable car up Vogel for the view of the lake and the Julian Alps. In autumn 2026 it was closed for maintenance until at least 1 December — check vogel.si before you go. Return to Ljubljana in the evening.
When to go
June and September are the sweet spot. July and August are busy at Bled.
